Choosing the Perfect Dance Studio

By January 11, 2018Uncategorized
Your child has expressed an interest in doing dance classes, you know there are dance studios in the area but have no idea which one you should choose. This is a dilemma that many parents face.
We are blessed to live in a city where there is an abundance of dance studios available so finding the right studio that will be a perfect fit for you and your child can seem overwhelming. Where do you start looking, what is important, how do you know what to look for? Here at Footloose we know that we aren’t the right choice for every dance family, so here are some of our top tips to consider which may help you to find YOUR Perfect Dance Studio!

WHAT DO YOU WANT?

Before you even start the process of looking for a Dance Studio, you first need to work out what you are looking for. The needs and expectations of individual parents and students varies greatly so it is important for you to decide whether you are wanting:
  • Fun recreational classes or a focus on advanced level competition training.
  • Exams or no exams.
  • A particular style or perhaps several styles.
  • A low key or grand scale annual performance or maybe even no performance at all.
  • Or perhaps your requirements are as simple as having your child dance on a convenient day/time/location to fit your families busy schedule.
Whatever your needs, it is important that you know these first before you even begin your search.
DO YOUR RESEARCH
  • The internet and social media are great for researching Dance Studios. Facebook Parent Groups, Parent Website Directories and parent reviews can be very helpful. Hearing other parents experiences can be great in knowing if a particular studio is the right fit for you and your child.
  • Keep in mind the size and location of a studio does not necessarily reflect the standard of tuition your child will receive. In addition exams and competitions are not the only measure of success within a dance school.  Find out what else they have to offer? Workshops, social events, birthday parties, private classes, performance opportunities, capped classes – this is where knowing what’s important to you is essential.
ASK QUESTIONS
  • It can be easy to do an internet search for “dance classes” and find a local Studio with a class time that suits your needs. However to ensure you find the perfect dance class where your child will thrive, we recommend contacting a few Studios. Your initial communications will provide insight into the culture of the studio and whether the type of class / tuition they offer are what you are looking for. Most studios offer Free Trial Classes so if you are unsure your child may be able to try several classes to work out which styles and teachers the enjoy the most.
  • Make an informed decision by asking as many questions as you need to. Every question is important if it helps you make the right decision for your child and the Studio will always be happy to answer any questions you may have.
COMMUNICATION
Good communication between the Studio and Parents is paramount. The studio should respond promptly to telephone /email enquiries and have methods for keeping parents informed of upcoming events such as newsletters, emails, Facebook / Instagram posts etc. Regardless of the type of Studio, the Staff should always be friendly and approachable and have your child’s best interest as their highest priority.

FINANCIAL COMMITMENT
As with any Sport, there is a financial commitment involved which varies greatly for each Studio. Make sure you understand this commitment perfectly before you sign up so there are no surprises down the track.

HAPPY SEARCHING!
There is no right or wrong when choosing a Dance Studio. It all comes down to which Studio will provide classes in which your child will flourish. A Studio where they will enjoy every lesson, make new friends, grow in confidence, learn new skills and continue to improve. Good Luck!
